May 8, 1918 - May 29, 2011 Valerie B. McCarthy, a long-time resident of Los Altos, California, died May 29, 2011, just after her 93rd birthday. Valerie was born in Melbourne, Australia, and came to the United States at an early age. She was an only child and had a wonderful childhood having a grandmother and great-grandmother also living at the family ranch in Los Gatos. Her family later moved to San Francisco before Valerie and her husband moved to Los Altos. Her beloved parents were a source of much pride and fond memories throughout her life. Valerie had a wide variety of interests which she studied and indulged in to the utmost extreme. She enjoyed various collections including stamps, postmarks, postcards, genealogy and tracing her family history over numerous generations and, most of all, anything related to tea. Quilting, knitting and crafts were other passions. She spent many hours teaching knitting and sharing her collections with school children and the elderly. Her husband of over 50 years, Robert McCarthy, preceded her in death in 1995. She is survived by two sons, Robert II (Mary) of South Dakota, and James (Robin) of Colorado; three grandchildren (Jason B. McCarthy, Denise B. McCarthy Marten and Kelly C. McCarthy Barnes) and five (and ½) great-grandchildren (Angel, Nicky, Evie, Jonathan, and Aubrey). Interment will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery in California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you do something nice for a loved one.
