Thelma Niemeyer

March 4, 1936 — March 8, 2016

Thelma Niemeyer, 80, passed away on March 8. 2016 following a long illness. She was born to Eva and Slim Tallman and was raised in the town of Chemainus on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Following high school graduation, Thelma worked as a private secretary in Vancouver and Seattle before moving to Denver. Once in Denver, Thelma embarked on a 40-year career at HDR Engineering, Inc., where she was the indispensable office manager. Thelma was integral in establishing HDR’s Denver office as the first branch, where she helped it from a few employees to hundreds. For many decades, Thelma was the backbone of the office as well as a trusted and loved mentor for many who worked there. Enjoying life was at the top of Thelma’s list regardless of what she was doing. Thelma often marked special occasions by throwing great parties for friends and loved ones. Frequently, she could be found at a museum, a street fair, a restaurant or neighborhood bar, the theater or just out for a stroll to "check out" the newest happenings. Quiet time was used to enjoy the amazing views from her sky-high apartments, or read, listen to music, play bridge or share a "scotch" with good friends. Traveling was a passion for Thelma. Her suitcase never gathered dust. She often visited family in Canada and Scottsdale. She made many trips abroad --- even going to London for lunch. One of her very favorite trips was to Churchill to visit the polar bears. Polar bears held a dear place in Thelma’s heart which she celebrated by giving “bear hugs” to all. Thelma is survived by her cousins, Virginia MacCarthy, Dr. Edward Castner, Dr. Paul Castner, and a host of friends who were truly family to Thelma as well. She was preceded in death by her parents and cousins, Bob, Joan & Rod Castner, and other relatives throughout British Columbia. There will no service in Denver for Thelma. She will be laid to rest near her cousins Bob and Joan, in Scottsdale, AZ. Memorial contributions may be sent in Thelma’s name to The Denver Zoo, 2300 Steele Street, Denver, CO 80205. These donations will be used for support of the resident polar bears. We know this will make Thelma smile.
