Sylvia Ann Sturr of Gulfport, FL, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. Sylvia was born on March 9, 1943 in Utica, NY to John and Mary (Renczenski) Docko. She attended Utica schools, and then in 1963, graduated with a nursing degree from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. Sylvia was a caring and skilled nurse, first working in the ER department, then as part of the IV team at St. Luke’s. She was the hospital nursing supervisor until leaving St. Luke’s in 1990. Sylvia was a staff nurse for LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY, and a triage nurse for North Medical Center in Liverpool, NY until her retirement in 1996. Sylvia married Bernard J. Sturr on July 11, 1964, and they shared a loving marriage for 51 years. Sylvia was a talented painter, and also enjoyed working in ceramics. Sylvia was a fan of movies, mainly of those from the 1940s era. She was an amazing cook and baker, and loved to provide warm and comforting meals for her family and friends. Her loving nature, caring heart, and warm sense of humor will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Gardens on Quail Skilled Nursing facility in Arvada, Colorado and the members of Honor Hospice for their devoted and compassionate care. Sylvia is survived by her children, Bernard J. Jr and Kathryn Sturr of Clayton, NY, Jennifer L. (Sturr) and Bob Perkins of Arvada, CO, and Randall T. Sturr of Solvay, NY. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard J. Sturr, her mother and father, Mary and John Docko, and her brother, Jack Docko. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Sylvia’s name to Pet Partners animal therapy, which she enjoyed so much during her stay at the skilled nursing facility.
