Richard Paul Rivera

April 22, 1963 — June 29, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Richard Paul Rivera, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend, coach, and teammate. After a valiant 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer, Rich passed away peacefully on June 29, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Molly and Albert Rivera welcomed their first of three sons, Richard, on April 22, 1963 in Lakewood, CO. His parents remember him having a sharp mind as well as a kind soul and fun-loving spirit. In the neighborhood and on the fields, if there was a group of friends and a game to be played, he’d be there. As the oldest brother, Rich led by example, and his younger brothers, Rodney and Ryan, looked up to him with pride and respect.

Richie graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1981. He was involved in numerous activities and sports, making many lifelong friends. He worked at BEST Products as a manager while attending college. He graduated from Metropolitan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems and Management Science. He started his career at Coopers and Lybrand as an auditor but found his passion designing Customer Relationship Management systems at MDC Holdings, StorageTek, Hunter Douglas and CenturyLink/Lumen. He was a hard worker, innovative and highly regarded in his field.

On May 28, 1988, Rich married his high school sweetheart, and best friend, Suzanne Hermanussen. Their 35-year union was a shining example of love and commitment; a partnership built on trust, laughter, and shared dreams. Together, they created a home filled with warmth and love, nurturing a family that would forever be Rich's greatest pride. Rich found immeasurable joy in raising his two sons, Jacob and Jarrod. He was their hero, their guiding light, and their constant source of encouragement and strength. Rich's love for his boys was unconditional and boundless, and he savored every moment spent with them. Whether coaching them in sports or in life, enjoying family dinner and game nights, or watching their favorite shows into the wee hours of the morning, Rich's presence in their lives is a gift they will always treasure.

Rich was a cherished friend to many and a stranger to none. His infectious laughter, genuine smile, and quick wit were a few of his most memorable gifts to those who knew him. He was compassionate, kind and generous. Always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Rich had a remarkable ability to lift others up and make those around him feel welcome and included. His influence on the lives he touched will continue to resonate for generations to come. The depth and breadth of these friendships are a testament to his character.

Rich's legacy will live on through the countless athletes he coached. Over a 20-year coaching career, he motivated his players to believe in themselves, to embrace challenges, and to celebrate their victories, no matter how big or small. The impact he had on the kids he nurtured and the friendships he formed along the way will continue to ripple through time.

Rich’s spirit will always be intertwined with the sports he cherished as a player, teammate, and leader. His competitive fire and drive were seen on volleyball courts, baseball and softball diamonds and even in the boxing ring. He seized every opportunity to be around people and play any and all games. His absence will be felt but his memory will be associated with the cheers and camaraderie of those who played alongside him.

As we bid farewell to Rich, let us remember the laughter he shared, the love he gave, and his unwavering faith. He reminded us all to cherish each day and to embrace the precious gift of life.

May you rest in peace, dearest Rich. You will be profoundly missed. Your lasting imprint is etched in the minds of those who knew you and your memory will forever be a beacon of light in our lives.

Throughout his courageous fight, Rich received numerous transfusions. Blood, plasma, and platelets are desperately needed for people fighting their own battles. Please consider donating as a powerful way to honor Rich and help others. If you would like to make a financial contribution toward a memorial bench at Rich’s gravesite, that would be wonderful, but please do not feel obligated. Our family received a bounty of love and support over the last year and a half and we are so very grateful to you all!

A Funeral Mass will be held at Spirit of Christ Catholic Church in Arvada, CO at 11 am on Monday, July 24, 2023. A Celebration of Life to share memories and stories about this extraordinary man will immediately follow the service.
