November 28, 1924 - May 9, 2013 Mike died peacefully at home following a long illness which he fought privately, with courage and dignity. Born in Youngstown Ohio, Mike was a good student in everything but music. His teacher once suggested that he refrain from singing. His was a neighborhood of boys and there was always a game to be played. He learned stick-ball and tackle football playing in the street. In high school he excelled in baseball, basketball and football. After graduating in 1943, Mike enlisted in the Air Force. Before his final papers arrived he was drafted into the Army. After some months of Army training he was given permission to return to the Air Force. Again fate quickly stepped in. More ground forces were needed to fight the Battle of the Bulge and he was recalled to his army unit. He served in Europe with an Armored Division and was honorably discharged in 1946. Friends coming to the University of Denver encouraged him to come and try out for football. He made the team and was accepted by the University. He captained the team in 1950. He met his wife Donna the same year. He was honored by the 1950-51 Edition of Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. He received his BA degree in 1951 and MA in 1959. Mike received offers from the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears but chose to begin his lifelong career with the Denver Public Schools as a coach, teacher, and administrator for 36 years. Devoted to his Church, he served as an usher at the Church of the Risen Christ since its inception. In his retirement years he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 10:am at Church of the Risen Christ. Rev. Larry Christensen officiating. Private interment will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery with Army honors rendered at the graveside. Arrangements are under the direction of Malesich and Shirey Funeral Home Colorado Crematory of Arvada.
