Mary Pearl Jackson was born on February 26th, 1937 in the town of Many, Louisiana, the parish seat of Sabine Parish in western Louisiana. She was the third of four children to Mary Lee Keith and Robert B. Jackson, of which she was the last surviving sibling. Mary, or “Mippy”, as she was known to family and friends, was always a strong yet bubbly personality that lived in the moment as well as lived for the moment. After graduating from Many High School, she moved on to dance and cheer atop Mike the Tiger’s cage at LSU, where she earned her degree of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 1959. Notably, she was a sister at TKA (Tau Kappa Alpha) at LSU where those sisterhood relationships had lasted a lifetime. Mary’s desire for the outdoors drew her to Yellowstone National Park where she worked in the Grand Lodge and gained her everlasting love of hiking. The experiences she had during her stint with the Park Service is something that she instilled in everyone around her, including family and friends. She took pride in teaching everything she knew about the outdoors to anyone that would lend her the time, and was equally receptive to learning anything new from those with greater experiences. After her time at Yellowstone, Mary moved on to Graduate School at Duke University where she finished with a Master’s degree in South Asian Studies in 1966. During her graduate program at Duke University, Mary married Neil Scott, then had her first son, Brett Scott, in 1967 after graduating. ¬¬¬¬Mary and Neil lived in California and Washington. Mary then followed her passion for hiking and moved to Denver, Colorado. In 1975 Mary married Richard Miller Kreutzer in Lakewood, Colorado and had her second son William Richard Kreutzer in 1978. They lived in Golden, Colorado where Mary became very active with the Jefferson County, Colorado government, and spent as much time as possible hiking and camping everywhere she could. Over the years she grew a crew of hiking friends that came to be known as the “Friends” hiking group, that traveled all over Colorado and surrounding areas to complete well-planned hiking and lodging trips together. Mary was known to lead the pack, and trail as the “caboose” all in the same hike. She encouraged everyone every step of the way! Mary is survived by her husband Richard M. Kreutzer of Lakewood, CO, her children Brett Scott of East Windsor, New Jersey, William R. Kreutzer of Del Norte, Colorado, her step-children Anne Hebert of Denver, Colorado, Ellen Kreutzer-Kerkhoff of Centennial, Colorado, Edward (Ted) Kreutzer of Oakland, California, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
