April 29, 1929 - August 15, 2014 Marcella Hammond, 93, passed away on the morning of August 15, 2014 at the Englewood Meridian Nursing Center, Englewood, Colorado where she had been a resident for the past year. Marcella "Marc" Lucile Formanack was born April 29, 1921 in Roswell, South Dakota to Fredrick and Augusta Frank Formanack. She was the fourth of five children and the grand-daughter of Joseph and Barbara Formanack, who came to Miner County in 1885. Marcella attended grade school in Roswell and graduated from Fedora High School in 1939. A year later she moved to Southern California where she worked in the aircraft industry. In February 1944 Marc joined the U.S. Navy as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). After boot camp at Hunter College, New York and storekeeper's school at Georgia State College in Milledgeville, she was stationed at Camp Farragut, Idaho. She was later assigned to the Tongue Point Naval Air Station near Astoria, Oregon. Marc was discharged from the Navy in February 1946. On June 4, 1946 she married Robert Hammond at St. Nickolas Catholic Church in Roswell, South Dakota. Marc and Bob had known each other since early childhood and were married for 64 years when Bob died in 2010. Following Bob's discharge from the Army, Bob and Marc operated the family farm near Roswell in Section 31 of Green Valley Township from 1950 until retirement in 1976. They then moved to Longmont, Colorado where Marc enjoyed, tennis, biking, exploring Colorado and countless hikes in the nearby Rocky Mountains. They also traveled throughout the U.S, as well as trips to Europe and Canada. Marc was also an accomplished artist whose oil paintings are cherished by family and friends, as well as a legendary cook and baker, known as "Cookie Grandma" to all her grandchildren. Marcella was an active member of St Joseph's Catholic Church in Howard, SD and the Spirit of Peace (now St. Francis of Assisi) parish in Longmont. Marcella is survived by her brothers, Richard Formanack of Mesa, Arizona, and Robert (Darleen) of West St. Paul, Minnesota, and children David (Diane) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Dennis (Susan) of Rapid City, South Dakota, Barbara (Steve Brown) of Seguin, Texas; grandsons Scott (Christy) and Jeff Hammond of Rapid City, Conor Brown of Lawrence, Kansas and Liam Brown, a student at Virginia Tech University, great granddaughters Anya, Abby and Ella Hammond of Rapid City, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters Irene Burkhart and Angela Formanack. Funeral services will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Rapid City on September 19, 2014, followed by internment of ashes at Black Hills National Cemetery. Marc was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed but always remembered by all those who were a part of her life and loved her so very much. All of her family would like to express their most sincere gratitude to the staff of the Memory Care Unit at the Englewood Meridian Nursing Center, and the People First hospice team who took such wonderful care of "Marcy" during the past year. Truly there are angels in this world.
