Lyle Edward Hanft

January 27, 1930 — July 4, 2018

Lyle “Bud” Edward Hanft, a friend to all, passed away on July 4, 2018 while in the care of Collier Hospice Center in Denver, CO. Lyle was born in Columbus Junction, Iowa on January 27, 1930 to Mary Kathryn Anwyl and Halle Hilton Hanft. Although the “Hawkeye State” remained in his heart throughout his life, Lyle decided to broaden his horizons by joining the FBI in Washington, DC. Being a farm boy, he soon tired of windowless basement rooms and turned his eyes to the sky. He was extremely proud of his 44 years in the employ of Continental Airlines. He considered it his lucky day when the door of a small aircraft opened and out stepped flight attendant Barrie Nadine Doxtater, raven haired beauty. As legend has it, he took one look and said under his breath “that is the girl for me.” Lyle and Barrie settled in El Paso, TX where they raised 5 children, made lifelong friendships, and were happily married for 45 years. He was an avid traveler and found joy in showing his family the world. He loved discovering other cultures, sightseeing, and finding a quiet corner pub where he would enjoy sipping a rum and coke and making a few new friends. He was a kid at heart and was known for his love of a good prank and his silly sense of humor. A dog lover, a charmer, a flirt to the end. He was a crossword aficionado and on Sundays, he and Barrie could be found with their clipboards and puzzles in a competition that spanned decades. They have the scores to prove it. He was quirky and unique, thrifty yet generous, kind and honest, always willing to help a friend in need. A character, who possessed great character. He will be sorely missed. Lyle was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barrie. He was survived by his children Lonnie Hanft, Wendy Mack, Suzanna Hanft-Bowie and her husband Philip, Nadine Peacock and her husband James, and Shanna Hanft-Rife and her husband Andrew. He is also survived by grandchildren Candice, Nick, Ryan, Jennifer, Marshall, Mitchell, Jason, Jeremy, Henry, Halle, Jageli, and nephews Gene and Dean.
