John (Jack) L. Schalk was born on July 3, 1931 in West Allis Wisconsin. He spoke fondly of growing up with his 4 brothers and 2 sisters, and his times in the north woods of Wisconsin, hunting and fishing. He served in the Korean war in 1952-1953 as part of the SCARWAF unit (Special Category Army Reassigned with the Air Force). He was proud to serve, but seldom spoke about the atrocities of war he experienced.
After Korea, he married Joyce Young and they had 6 children together. Mary, Susan, Joan, Robert, Virginia, and Joseph. They moved to Colorado in 1962. Jack and Joyce were active community members, and spent many hours with the Arvada Elks, Knights of Columbus and other local organizations. He loved the Arvada area and building houses, and in 1976 he created his own company, Schalk & Company Realtors. He was known and respected throughout Arvada and the company name is still used by his son Robert. Jack was a realtor for over 50 years and was very proud of his accomplishments. He could fix just about anything and had every tool in what he called his ‘inventory” to do it.
He divorced and later married Norma (McKinney). Together they continued the work he loved in real estate. He was by her side until her death May of 2023.
Jack Schalk will be missed by all of us, and is survived by his 6 children, 8 grand grandchildren and 2 stepsons.
