October 26, 1926 - February 23, 2013 John Calvin Hathaway, 86, of Arvada, Colorado, passed away on February 23, 2013. Prior to his recent move to Arvada, John spent the last 23 years in the Buena Vista area of Colorado. One of five children born in 1926 to Rosella and William Oliver Hathaway of Curtis, NE, his family moved to Eastern Colorado when he was a young boy and later to Stoneham and Evans, CO. In Evans, he met his future wife, Mary Shannon. During World War II, they traveled to Vancouver, Washington to find jobs. Mary worked in a hospital and John worked as a welder in the Kaiser Naval Shipyards. They moved to Denver, married, and John started working at Gates Rubber Company at the age of 17. The Hathaway's settled in Wheat Ridge in 1949, built their home from any army barracks and raised a family. He was a devoted family man, provider, and proudly retired from Gates after 36 years. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary, brothers Fay and Dale of Denver, and sister, Velda of Greeley. John is survived by his sister, Darlene and her husband Lee of Greeley. John was the beloved father of daughters; Jeanie (Mike) Cook of Wheat Ridge, Nancy (Chick) Runge or Lakewood, and son, John S. Hathaway or Wheat Ridge. He was the treasured grandfather of Nicola Erb of Thornton and Denise (Ray) Brown of Brighton. He was married to Claire Schafer of Buena Vista for seven happy years until she passed away in 2010. John loved life and truly enjoyed living in what he called “God's Country”. Visitation to take place Saturday March 2, 2013, 12:00 noon, at Crossroads Church of Denver, 9725 W. 50th Ave. Wheat Ridge, with a Memorial Service at 1:00pm, followed by a reception. Arrangements under the direction of Malesich and Shirey Funeral Home.
