Ivan Howard Carper

October 3, 1928 — December 8, 2020

Dr. Ivan Howard Carper was born on October 3, 1928 in Lebanon, KS and went peacefully to be with the Lord at age 92 on December 8, 2020 in Westminster, CO. The son of Esther (Noble) Carper and Edward Paul Carper, Ivan was raised on the family farm in Lebanon, Kansas with his parents and seven siblings; four brothers and three sisters. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1946 and Kansas State University in 1951. After serving for 3 years in the U.S. Air Force and then the U.S. Army, Ivan attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine, graduating in 1959, later returning to complete credentials in General Surgery. Ivan married Norma McKim in 1952. They had five children; Dennis, Robin, Michael, Kristin and Jonathan. Norma and Ivan were married for 66 years prior to Norma’s passing in 2018. After the completion of Ivan’s medical education and residencies in Lawrence and Kansas City, KS, the family lived in Halstead and Newton, KS, where Ivan practiced medicine as a general practitioner at Hertzler Medical Center and as a general surgeon at Axtell Clinic for nearly 30 years, followed by several years working in emergency medicine. Ivan and Norma retired to Colorado Springs, CO in 1993 and moved to Covenant Living retirement home in Westminster, CO in 2014. Ivan was active in medical missions throughout his career, participating in international humanitarian trips to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. He was interested in history, music and sports, and was an avid KU basketball fan who rarely missed a game broadcast in more than 60 years. In retirement, Ivan volunteered with Stephen Ministries, served at the Catholic Charities Marian House Soup Kitchen, and ran a television camera for church services at the First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. He will be remembered for his love and support for the education of his children and other family members, his deeply caring nature for the health and wellbeing of others, his generosity and his keen sense of humor. Ivan is survived by his five children and their spouses; Dennis and Michelle Friesen-Carper of Saint Paul, MN, Robin and Tom Kluge of Lawrence, KS, Mike and Billy Mulford-Carper of Austin, TX, Kristin and Mark Trollinger of Charlotte, NC, and Jonathan and Dasha Carper of Denver, CO; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Sarah Friesen-Carper and Andrew Tengwall, Paul and Elizabeth Damico Carper, Joshua and Kristine Lollar, Erin Lambert, Caroline and Cameron Carper, Audrey and Emma Trollinger; eight great-grandchildren, and his sister Verda Franklin of Smith Center, Kansas, and brother Owen Carper of North Newton, Kansas.
