March 1, 1924 - December 5, 2012 Homer was born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi on March 1, 1924. He was the youngest child born to his mother Carrie Ellen Hunter and his father Lonnie McGowan. He attended school in Crystal Springs until he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. The two most important events in his life happened that year. Homer was inducted into service for his country and he married his beloved “Bea”, Annie Brown. Homer served in World War II and in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. With the exception of the times spent serving abroad, Homer and Bea traveled together throughout his twenty one years of service to his country. While in service Homer earned his High School Certificate. After returning from the Air Force he and Annie settled in Denver, Colorado where they have made their home for the past 48 years. Homer joined the US Postal Service where he was employed for twenty one years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and “hanging out” with friends and family, many of whom called him “Big Mac” or uncle Mac. He and Bea made many trips to Mississippi and Chicago where many family members live. Homer had two brothers who preceded him in death, Eugene (Rosalie) and Jody, and a sister Lucille (James). He leaves to morn him his beloved “Bea”, wife of 69 years, a sister-in-law Mary Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends especially Mac and Ella and James Wilkins Jr. Uncle Mac we will miss you and we love you.
