Herman Franklin Wehling, 94, of Arvada CO died in his sleep Friday 10 January 2020. He was born March 21, 1925 in Broken Bow, NE, the son of Frank and Mary Wehling. The family moved to Denver in 1942. Herman graduated from St Joseph’s High School in 1944. He worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad as bicycle messenger boy, hostler, fireman, and railroad engineer. He drove the California Zephyr, the Winter Park Ski Train, among other routes. He retired in 1983 after 38 years. On November 11, 1956 he married Nina Grace Stanford of San Antonio, Texas, a lovely nurse that he was lucky enough to catch. Nina preceded him in death in 1999. The couple had one child, Wayne. Herman was a well-known around the area for his many odd jobs and businesses. Always keeping busy, Herman sold firewood, made jewelry, and he was a beekeeper. The go-to man for swarms of bees, Herman sold Wehling Honey for nearly 60 years and mentored many local beekeepers. He loved camping, fishing, hunting, and travel. Herman was an avid gardener and shared the gardens bounty with friends, neighbors, and the church. Most recently Herman made “tin spinners” and sold them at flea markets and Eckerts Garden Center. Herman is survived by his son, Dr Wayne F Wehling, wife Donna and two daughters Madison and Chloe of Silver Spring, MD. He is also survived by his sister Mary Frances Perry of Denver, sister in law Joanne Wehling of Sister Bay, WI, 2 nieces, 2 nephews and their families. He remained very close to the farm in Broken Bow and to the Pelster family. He also leaves friends and neighbors who took very good care of him. The funeral will be 10am Saturday, 18 January at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Arvada.
