Grant Allan Johnson

April 2, 1932 - April 2, 2013 Grant Allan Johnson, 81, of Boulder, Colorado, died Monday April 2 at Manor Care. He was born on April 2, 1932 in Los Angeles, California to Jack and Clarice Hedges Johnson. He attended Flintridge Academy Boarding School from 1939 thru 1946 and Huntington High school in 1947 and 1948. He served in the army from 1953 to 1955 and served in Japan. In 1956 he married Barbara Geitgey, and they had three children, Terry, Steve, and Scott (deceased). He attended UCLA from 1955 to 1960 and studied sociology and cultural anthropology. He worked a variety of jobs including an aviation school and the Santa Monica Cinema before settling in as a purchasing agent for a construction company in Huntington Beach. Meanwhile, he pursued his love of learning at Cal State in Long Beach and earned his master's degree in sociology in 1969. In 1970, he and Barbara came to CU Boulder to jointly pursue graduate degrees. He pursued a Ph.D. in sociology with an initial focus on studying innovators, then World War II propaganda and government social control of the movie industry. After teaching sociology courses at Denver's Metro College, he joined Dr. Bob Hunter at the Center for Action Research at CU-Boulder as a research sociologist in 1973. Work for this career focused on action research and program development for delinquency prevention, including law-related education. He was an ABD, “all but dissertation” in his formal studies. He married Antonia Lawrence in 1975, and they had two children, Rebecca and Sloan. Right to the end of his life on earth, his passions continued to be movies, learning, and reading fiction. At the top of his values were the pursuit and development of one's unique talents to help people. Never-ending was his adapting to change. After retirement until his death, he partnered with his wife in action research and program development for innovative and efficient accent reduction learning at the Center for Talk Mastery and Clear Talk Mastery, Inc. He did magic in his editing. In addition to his four beloved children, he is survived by three beloved grandchildren, four half-sisters and dozens of Lawrence in-laws. He and his family give thanks to the medical and rehabilitation staff at Boulder Community Hospital, Manor Care of Boulder, and TRU Hospice for their loving and skilled care in his last month of life here on earth. On April 13, his ashes will be scattered above Chautauqua in Boulder and later in summer at his favorite beach of Santa Monica, California.
