Frances D. Stevens

January 23, 1926 ~ August 16, 2015 Frances Stevens passed on August 16, 2015 at the Progressive Care Center in Canon City, Colorado.  Frances was born to Joseph and Mary Zakraisek on January 23, 1926 in Leadville, Colorado.  She was a graduate of Leadville High School and worked at the Zaitz Mercantile Company as a secretary and as office manager at the Zalar Buick Agency. Frances and Joseph Stevens were married in Leadville in 1953 and moved to Canon City upon Joe’s retirement in 1965  They were blessed with twin daughters, Diane Marie and Marion Kay, who died in infancy in 1954.  Joseph preceded her in death in 1973. Her remaining sibling is her sister, Josephine Malesich.  Brothers Louis, Carl and Edward Zakraisek, Anton Zalar, and sisters Christina Jakopic and Angela Raine preceded her in death.  She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews Frances was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Canon City, St Michael's Altar and Rosary Society, KSKJ Lodge #56, Slovenian Women’s Union #66 and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Leadville. Her faith was a very important part of her life.  Up to the time of her death, she insisted on being taken to the Chapel for Mass at the nursing home. Frances was a devoted homemaker, wife, sister, aunt and friend whose small physical stature was over-shadowed by a huge, giving heart. She always remembered birthdays, anniversaries and holidays with an appropriate card and a thoughtful gift. Although Canon City was the place she and Joe called home since moving there in 1965, she was also a Leadville native at heart because of her family roots, but could easily call both communities home.  She will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. There will be a funeral Mass for Frances at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Canon City on September 9, 2015 at 11:00 AM. A private interment will be held In Leadville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Progressive Care Center, 1338 Phay Avenue, Canon City, CO 81212.
