May 10, 1935-February 16, 2015 Ethel " Darlene " Lawrence died on Feb. 16 at Mountain Vista Health Center after a prolonged and courageous battle with Huntington’s Disease. She was born on May 10, 1935, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Leland and Opal Gilleland. She is survived by a son, Chris (Melinda) and grandchildren, Grace and Daniel, sister-in-law Betty Taylor of Grand Junction, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, and a son, Mark. Darlene, as she preferred to be called, moved frequently as a child and eventually ended up in Rifle, Colo., where she met, fell in love with and married Keith in 1953. After living at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, as a guest of Uncle Sam, they were able to put down roots in Denver, where she became fast friends with neighbors and square dance companions. She was born-again as a small child at her parent’s church in Bennett, Colo., and it was through her gentle urgings that her husband and both sons became born-again Christians as well. Later in life, she and Keith became “road warriors” going on frequent trips all over this country. Afterwards, when her condition progressed, she showed remarkable calmness and courage as she waited on the Lord (Psalm 27: 13, 14). When life became too much for her, she always relied on Isaiah 40:31, “But they that wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” A life-long homemaker, she will be remembered for her service to the Lord’s body of believers, through her faithfulness to Jesus, and her forthrightness in speaking about her love for the Savior, her husband, her kids and her grandkids. Services will be held at 10 am, February 27, at Highland Baptist Church, 9185 Utica St., Westminster, CO.
