Carol Ann Copeland

Carol was born September 3rd, 1940 in Waco, Texas to Joseph and Virginia Schmidt. She died peacefully on February 25th, 2023 in Denver, Colorado after a series of illnesses. She is survived by her children Catherine Anne (Katy) Thach and Robert Edwards (Ed) Thach, Jr., both of Denver, Colorado, brothers Joseph D. Schmidt (Martha), of Jacksonville, Florida and Frederick J. Schmidt, of Omaha, Nebraska, her step children, Kim Copeland Higgins of San Marcos, Texas and Kelly Copeland Hanshaw and Karol Copeland Tritz, both of Houston. She is also survived by her beloved dog “Peep”. She was raised in Kansas City, Missouri and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and graduated with honors from John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City.

After High School Carol attended Oklahoma State University and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. After one year she married Robert Edwards (Bob) Thach, and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where Bob attended Harvard University. She continued her studies and received a degree in Natural Sciences from Harvard University. After graduation she worked for U.S. Solicitor General Archibald Cox as his legal secretary.

She then returned to Oklahoma City, married Jim Copeland and then moved to Houston where she dedicated herself to providing a good home for her children and step children. Later they moved to Tucson, Arizona and eventually back to Houston where she helped her husband develop an exotic game ranch called “Texas Safari” on the outskirts of Houston. At age 67, after Jim’s death, she moved to Edmond, Oklahoma and returned to a job in local retail where she was excited to work.

Throughout her life Carol’s Christian faith radiated in all she did. Wherever she lived she was active in churches and loved singing in choirs. Her children will carry on her love of music. Carol was a gracious and talented homemaker, an excellent decorator, making all of her homes beautiful and comfortable for family and friends. She loved cooking and was excellent at creating wonderful and memorable holidays and special occasions. Her many pets were very important to her. The mutual love and connection they felt for each other was special to her and touching to all.

Four words to summarize her life: kindness, compassion, love, and forgiveness.
